CHICAGO, Jan. 2 -- President-elect Barack Obama arrived home in Chicago on Friday after bidding adieu to his native Hawaii and wrapping up a 13-day pre-inaugural vacation. He planned to spend just over 48 hours at home before moving his family to Washington on Sunday, in time for his daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, to begin classes at Sidwell Friends School. The future first family will stay at the historic Hay-Adams Hotel, just steps from the White House, before moving to Blair House on Jan. 15.

Obama concluded a relaxing respite in Hawaii during which he remained largely secluded at a rented seaside vacation compound with his wife, Michelle, their daughters and several friends from Chicago and their families. As the Obamas left, the president-elect waved from inside his black SUV to hundreds of local residents who lined the streets. A few residents waved ti leaves, a traditional Hawaiian blessing.

When thunderstorms caused an island-wide blackout that knocked out power to Barack Obama's $9 million vacation rental home, the First Vacationer took it in stride and simply called it an early night. The president-elect didn't even use emergency generators offered by local authorities and the power company.

After 11 hours in darkness, Obama emerged Saturday morning and resumed his regular holiday routine, with a morning workout at a nearby Marine Corps base fitness center. Mayor Chuck Hazama -- yes, he is still known as Mayor Chuck on the islands, even though it has been a number of years since he was mayor of Rochester -- invited us into his home one afternoon and shared Maui-made wine and munchies with us. He lives in his boyhood home in a typical residential neighborhood and has filled his yard with Hawaiian fruit trees and flowering shrubs. He has one of only four yellow tulip trees in all of Hawaii.

High on an outcropping above Oahu's northeast coast, we parked our Harley Davidson and spotted a fisherman on a rocky point below, struggling with something in the water. Finally we saw that he had snagged a giant sea turtle and now was trying to free it.

As we watched, the angler carefully hauled the heavy reptile up. He removed the hook from a flipper and the turtle dove back into the blue surf and disappeared from view. Unexpectedly -- thanks to our biker rental agent who had sent us to this unmarked lookout point -- we had caught a glimpse of the unique intersection of climate, geology, wildlife, tourism and daily life in the Hawaiian islands.

Disneyland Resort Guests Receive A Christmas Gift of More Time

(October 15, 2007) - In traditional holiday spirit, Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure parks will become dazzling winter wonderlands featuring spectacular entertainment, amazing decorations, festive foods and favorite adventures and attractions during the season that runs Nov. 16 through Jan. 6.

This year, Disneyland Resort offers vacation guests the gift of more time with a fourth night free added to the purchase of a three-night vacation package.

One additional night provides more time to explore the many holiday happenings. Disneyland Resort theme park hours are also extended for much of the season, and the Downtown Disney District and three Disneyland Resort hotels join in the merriment with special entertainment and holiday dining.

Global Rediscovery of Euro-Caribbean Paradise Spurs Island-Wide Surge

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Curaçao, the largest and most populous of the Netherlands Antilles island chain in the southern Caribbean, is experiencing a tourism boom with global tourist arrivals surging into double digits for the first half of 2007. The increase has prompted island-wide development of six new resorts and expansion of five existing resorts that will deliver 1,241 new rooms over the next two years.

For the first six months of the year, the 171-square mile island experienced an increase in visitor arrivals of 15.8 percent from Europe; 32.3 percent from South America; and 14 percent from the Caribbean region. Though American arrivals showed an overall decline of 4.1 percent during the same time period, the month of June yielded a 16.4 percent increase in U.S. arrivals. Moreover, cruise ship visits to the island grew by 60 percent yielding a 17.1 percent increase in passenger visits.

Tourism as an industry represents 15 percent of Curaçao’s GDP.

Curaçao tourism officials credit a global rediscovery of the island’s unique and diverse attributes for its newfound popularity.

Agricultural Revitalization Program At Paradise Bay Resort and Spa Grenada

Pardee Lake has one week left in 2007 season

As of last Friday a total of 64,000 pounds of trout had been planted this season by Pardee Lake Recreation Inc. and the California Department of Fish and Game with another plant scheduled for Saturday.

Also as of last Friday, only two weeks remained before PLR closes the lake for the 2007 fishing and boating season.

The lake water level held constant at 11 feet below spill last week. Recent rain washed a little soil and debris into the water so clarity suffered a little and will until rains subside. Surface temperatures and overcast skies have cooled the water to the mid 60s, with rain and overcast forecast for this week.

Trolling was still good but bait and still fishing with night crawlers from boats was quicker and produced larger fish. The mouth and the face of the dam and along the barrel line in the south end were the best for trolling while south end coves and the Log Jam were best for still and bait enthusiasts.
